Re: [HolisticPet2] Re: Raw Feeding

I have used Benadryl for years with my pets. I had rescued a
Lhasa Apso once he was an older guy and came with a chronic ear infection and constant itching of his skin.  He was put on Bedadryl and bathed with pine tar soap which seemed to clear him right up.

No problem about delay, Marilyn. I think I pretty much learned
everything I was going to learn about feeding raw a long time ago.
The only list I stayed with was 'raw chat' because it allowed OT.
Well, that is very limited. I thought I could get assistance there,
if needed, that would be dog related but might not be diet related.
It is heavily moderated.

The 'Basic' list is different than the other lists. That one is all
veterans, many with huge kennels. If you ask a newbie question, you
get referred to what is likely now called 'rawfeeding' and you won't
get an answer from the 'basic' group. The reason I say that they
saved the day is because none of those people are using 50
supplements or vegetable purees, etc. I just lurked.

I went through months of making veg/fruit purees, usually adding some
organs, because I thought they HAD to have veg. No, they don't! The
dogs would not touch any of the stuff. As a result, my chickens got
overweight and stopped laying! That was a major waste of time and
effort - and pointless. "Sorry Jerry, I don't have time to fix dinner
or clean up the kitchen AGAIN because I have to make this stuff for
the dogs!"

When I went back through my tablet of notes and started marking out
things I'd 'reasoned' did not apply, I ended up with one supplement -
Fish Oil. I can't afford the wild salmon oil. The only reason I use
fish oil is for the Omega 3 to offset the deficiency in chicken and
I'm not very consistent with that. Some say it must be given with
Vit.E. One of my dogs HATES fish - the other two will take the
capsules as treats and will eat fish. Canned is all I can get/afford.
Farmed catfish costs as much as steak.

"Balance over time." I'd agree with that but the lists of things most
people have access to and can afford blows me away. My dogs can have
chicken, turkey, and pork. I'm limited to what I can buy at the
market. Organs vary - I buy whatever I can get when it is available.
Mail-order pre-made is out of the question.

Big guns - I agree. I treat everything myself naturally and that
nearly always works. This itching problem PROBABLY could have been
solved in the beginning by using an OTC antihistamine. I didn't know
the cause of what I was trying to treat. I received a private mail
suggesting Benadryl and I tried it. The sender was afraid to post
that to the raw group. Ta Da! I have no idea why that worked. It has
been months now. All of their hair has grown back and the wounds have
healed.

Now, if I could just find a cure for deafness and an addled mind -
dogs, not me.
