[HolisticPet] Help for elderly cat with kidney disease please
Hello
We are Canadians who are presently living in Japan. One of our cats (about 15 years old) who we brought from Canada with us had been getting increasingly difficult to feed and it seemed that she only wanted to eat homemade cream of chicken soup.
Then she stopped eating. After two days she still seemed active and fine but how I was worried that she would not eat so I took her to the vet.
He did a blood test and found her BUN was at 106 and her Mg was 3.0. He also found her TPT (ALT) was 179. He diagnosed Kidney disease and we have been taking her daily for subcutaneous hydration and shots of various medications (not sure exactly what but antibiotics and whatever would be the typical mainstream medications)
After two days she is actually doing much better - she is more active, brighter and actually ate a little bit of roasted chicken this morning so I am feeling encouraged as we were really thinking we would lose her which would be especially hard after losing her brother at the end of January.
The trips to the vet are hard on her and she is so thin it is hard to find places for the needles. I can tell it hurts and she is sore afterwards but still it does seem to be helping.
When her brother was ill some people on this list made recommendations that were very helpful and kept him alive and healthy much longer than anyone had expected so I am hopeful that some people might have suggestions that would help Kiko as well.
ONe of the things we gave her brother who had an advanced stage of liver disease was zentonil. I wonder if this would help her too since she did have high levels there too though the vet seems to be mostly worried about the kidney but I don't want to mix too many things together and get an unhappy result.
In any case I would really appreciate any suggestions for helping an elderly cat with kidney disease. Thank you so much. Mindy PS I can usually find a way to order products from the US.
