FW: [HolisticPet] Re: Losing muscle mass in rear legs-Cushings?

Do you have access to a pool? My Winston was losing mass in his rear
legs and had a hard time getting up and down. He is going to physical
therapy once a week. We have other exercise we do in between sessions.
It has really helped him. Once our pool reaches 80 degrees, I can start
working him in our pool. Pattie and the "Cocker Crew"

Thanks, Nancy! We live on the side of a mountain so Shadow gets plenty
of up
and downhill exercise. <g> I spoke with my holistic vet yesterday and
he's
going to be sending some homeopathic treatments. Am considering
accupuncture
since we have a vet here locally that does it but not sure if he only
does
"nerve" type work or actually gets into meridians.

No, Shadow doesn't drag his hind toes when he walks. I had my carpeting
in
FL replaced with tile but made sure when picking it out that it wasn't
slippery when wet. What I didn't take into consideration was that
slobber is
slippery no matter what! <g> As for wood floors, I would never have them
because of what you described. I think they are just too dangerous for
dogs,
especially when they get older and their pads get smooth. We have
carpeting
in NC and when it needs to be replaced, will go to tile again.

I'm going through the same thing w/my 14 yr. old mix Gemma. She's been
getting weaker and more wobbly behind lately. From what I've found on
the
internet, it's a common thing when they're older. I've used the
homeopathic
remedy Conium Maculatum before and it helped quite a bit--I was able to
scratch her back w/o her collapsing. Right now I'm doing some hind-end
strengthening work, like walking up hills, walking over cavaletti and
having
her stand on 3 legs. Doing sit/stand is good, but poor Gemma doesn't
even
sit anymore and it takes some time for her to lay down sometimes.

She's had acupuncture treatments and in the past her kidney meridian
needed
work. Bloodwork shows that everything is normal for a 'dog her age'.
She's
boycotted raw food after eating it for 10 yrs so now she's getting
Orijen
dry and grain-free canned food.

Does your dog drag his hind toes when he walks? She does this as well
and
her gait is a bit out of sync between the front pair and back pair. So
now
our legs are a bit slower but going someplace new usually perks her up.
When
she walks around our rugs onto the wood floors she does slip quite a bit
and
sometimes does a Bambi on them.

Check out Conium Maculatum--this also helped with some trembling that
she
would sometimes do.
